BOBBY LABONTE
STILL OKEY DOKEY

A kaleidoscope of neon colors flashes in the city of Las Vegas. But, the city becomes even more colorful when NASCAR rolls into town. Las Vegas embraces NASCAR fans and drivers. Many fans begin arriving several days prior to the race to take advantage of the many opportunities to meet drivers at various appearances.

Once again this year, several drivers made an appearance at the NASCAR Café located in the Sahara Hotel. Bobby Labonte greeted fans and signed autographs for more than 2 hours. He then graciously consented to an interview with us.

Bobby was relaxed and congenial even though he had to leave for another appearance immediately after our interview. We thought this may be a bit exhausting, however, Bobby said he had 100% control over his appearance schedule.

When we asked Bobby what he liked to do when he had a day off, he said he liked to work on his son's quarter midget. He enjoys working out as well. Bobby's favorite meal includes Blackened Halibut. The movie he likes the most is "Oh Brother Where Art Thou". He listens to 80's music and the song he feels best describes his life is "We Are The Champions" by Queen.

Bobby describes his best race as the Brickyard 400 in 2000 when he beat Rusty Wallace for the victory. Bobby continued on that year to become the NASCAR Winston Cup Champion!

We remarked to Bobby that his driving style was very laid back, as though everything was "okey dokey". Bobby said that he had been nick named "Ice Cube" by former crew chief, Tony Glover. When we asked why, he responded that his brother, Terry Labonte, was the "Ice Man" therefore, he would have to be "Ice Cube".. So, as he appears to be out just for another Sunday drive, it is actually an icy calm that Bobby displays behind the wheel.

It was truly a delight having the opportunity to talk with Bobby. We hope the tracksidegirls brought him a little luck as the next day, he won the Bud Pole and set a new track record at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. On Sunday, he had an impressive race where he finished 4th.

We wish Bobby continued success throughout 2003 in his quest for a 2nd Winston Cup championship.
