The United States Air Force and Elliott Sadler reinforce
NASCAR and fan patriotism
Dover Downs, Sept 2002 - One year ago NASCAR and it's fans returned to business as usual at Dover Downs after the horrifying events of September 11th. Though it was a difficult task moving on, it is what all Americans strived to do. NASCAR and Dover Downs teamed up to show our government, military, police and firefighter personnel, fans, family and friends their unconditional support. This year in order to commemorate all who supported, fought, and fight for Americas freedom, NASCAR and Dover Downs dazzled us once again. Tracksidegirls were there to give you their experience as they watched all.
Each spectator, not knowing why, as they entered there perspective gates were given as American flag to carry with them to their seats. The prerace ceremony began with a parade lap filled with firetrucks, emergency and military vehicles. This was followed by a prayer and blessing from Pastor Dan Schafer, Heightstown, NJ that graced us with his presence throughout the day. Next was the singing of God Bless America. As NASCAR'S singing guest Coley McCabe began the song it wasn't long after the entire track erupted in song. NASCAR fans, who some feel are not the brightest, sang the entire song. Next was the singing of the National Anthem. We were honored to have the voices of the United States Coast Guard Academy Cadet Glee Club from New London, CT present to lead us into song. Nearing the end of the song the flags that were given to fans upon entering the track were raised high and proud. To have a view of the stands from the pits was overwhelming. Truly a blessing that we hope everyone eventually has the opportunity to experience. As usual, at Dover Downs, the 103rd Fighter Wings from Bradley Air National Guard Base in CT, provided us with an amazing display of A-10 Wart Hogs, AKA Tank Killers. To wrap up the opening ceremony forty-three tankers, donated from surrounding military bases, appeared to escort our drivers around the track.
Throughout the weekend military presence was accommodating and strong. The four star generals represented the foundation that Americans build their pride upon. They were strong yet gentle, stern yet friendly. Greeting, shaking hands, and wishing people a good time made their personality shine as did the stars and metals on their uniforms. A special thank you to them and all the military personnel for donating their time.
Winston Cup teams are always ready to participate in the patriotic festivities and this weekend was no different. The Wood Brothers and Elliott Sadler had one of the biggest displays by showing off their United States Air Force sponsored car. Sadler began race weekend by qualifying fifteenth. Adjustments were made after practice and happy hour on Saturday. During the hours and days preceding the race Sadler made himself available to fans, media and photographers. I saw Sadler signing many autographs and giving interviews to several media personalities. Sadler gave me the opportunity to capture his car on film when the caution flag flew during happy hour. Cars where lined up in the garage area waiting to return to the track. I positioned myself near Sadler's car in order to try and capture a good shot. As the track went back green the cars started pulling off one by one. Sadler however, seeing what I was trying to accomplish waited to pull off until I snapped my shot. As he drove away I gave him a wave and he responded with a thumbs up. Thank you Elliott Sadler !! Let this be a small reminder as to the access that fans get to the drivers and how they do try to accommodate us.
Unfortunately Sunday didn't turn out to be as successful as Sadler would have liked,
finishing twenty-fifth. This finish did move him up one spot in the points. At this time
Elliott Sadler is digging to finish in the top twenty for the Winston Cup Championship.
Tracksidegirls want to take time to salute Elliott Sadler and the Wood Brothers for honoring
our military. Best of luck to Sadler and military personnel ashore and abroad fighting for our
freedoms.
