It was 1994 when Kasey began his racing career on dirt tracks. He began driving sprint cars in 1998 and won 12 events, as well as the USAC Midget Series Championship and Driver of the Year. Kasey won the USAC Silver Crown Rookie of the Year title in 2000. He was the first driver, since Jeff Gordon, to win consecutive "Night Before the 500 Classic" at Indianapolis Raceway Park in 2000 and 2001.
Robert Yates signed Kasey in 2002 to run a limited schedule in the NASCAR Busch Grand National Division. His highest finish that year was 10th at Michigan International Speedway. He came back to that track and won his first Busch Series Bud Pole in 2003. He had his first Busch Series victory at Homestead-Miami Speedway in November 2003, racing for Atkins Motorsports.
Ray Evernham signed Kasey to succeed the semi-retiring Bill Elliott in the #9 Dodge Dealers/UAW Dodge for the full NASCAR Nextel Series. He will also run the entire Busch Series schedule in the #38 Great Clips Dodge.
