NBC NASCAR COVERAGE NOT SO GOOD . . .
Joliet, IL: After having more than half a season to prepare their broadcast of the Tropicana 400, why did NBC fail so miserably?
It seemed that the entire race was presented by amateurs. The pre-race "Countdown to Green" offered little for us to look forward to for the remaining race schedule. Wally Dallenbach's lap around the track made me wonder if he ever really drove in a Winston Cup race. When Benny Parsons gave out his "Golden Benny Award", it didn't appear to be well planned. The cameraman goofed by moving back too soon allowing the audience to see a person handing Benny some money, which he has pledged to the crew that successfully executes a pit stop in under 13 seconds.
Many of the fans I have talked with felt the pit reporters didn't know what they were talking about. They stumbled and mumbled throughout the race leaving gaps in their commentary while we waited in vain for Allen, Benny or Wally to fill in.
One of the biggest complaints I've heard has been about the commercials. It seemed that the race was interrupting a monotonous repetition of the same commercials. With the number of sponsors involved in NASCAR, don't you think we could get a little more variety?
The sad fact is that we'll have to endure 18 more races like this one.
Let us know what you think about the NBC broadcast.
